Petrol vs Diesel vs Electric Car – Total Cost Calculator
Before You Decide: What the Numbers Don't Tell You
Our car cost calculator estimates the total cost of owning a petrol, diesel or electric vehicle based on your purchase price, annual mileage, energy consumption, maintenance costs and estimated depreciation.
Understanding the results
The estimated resale value is based on general depreciation assumptions. Actual resale prices depend on the vehicle's condition, mileage, age, reliability and market demand. Maintenance and repair costs are also estimates, not guaranteed expenses.
Is a diesel car right for you?
Diesel vehicles are generally better suited to drivers who regularly cover longer distances. If your daily journeys are mostly shorter than 10–15 km, particularly with frequent cold starts, a modern diesel may not be the best choice.
Short trips can prevent the engine and exhaust system from reaching their optimal operating temperatures. This may cause problems with the diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and other emissions components.
There is no universal minimum driving distance: journey duration, engine temperature and driving conditions matter too.
Be careful when buying a used car
A low purchase price doesn't always mean a good deal. Before buying, research the specific model, engine and production year online. Look for common mechanical problems, reliability reports, recalls and typical repair costs.
Check the service history, previous accidents and overall condition. An independent pre-purchase inspection can help you avoid expensive surprises.
Remember: The cheapest car to buy isn't necessarily the cheapest car to own. Use this calculator as a starting point, compare different scenarios and research your chosen vehicle before making a decision.
